Physical Therapy Evaluation and Treatment

Each initial appointment will include a full evaluation, including subjective history taking, objective tests and measures, and a detailed treatment plan based on findings. We will work together to establish goals and a  treatment schedule to fit your lifestyle. Interventions may include dry needling, cupping, manual therapy, joint mobilizations, taping, flexibility or strength drills. Each patient is unique in their needs and we will adapt and adjust your plan as you make progress towards your goals.

Breast Cancer Rehabilitation

Dr. Cherwin is a Certified Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Therapist

Breast Cancer represents about 25% of all cancers found in women and affects our skin, muscles, skeletal system, respiratory system, lymphatics, nerves and vascular tissues. It is important to have a clinician who understands the dynamic ways each different diagnosis can impact recovery, how to properly mobilize tissues post mastectomy and reconstruction and can teach lymphedema management strategies for home care. Mastectomies are deeply personal procedures and I will approach each unique case considering the physiological differences, your body impact and treatment plan as well as your navigation through each phase of healing. I completed by Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Therapist training with PORi in 2019 and have been blessed to walk along side so many women who were impacted by this diagnosis.

Exercise Prescription

Exercise is an under utilized tool to reach rehabilitation goals, reduce pain and improve our function. I want to see you lifting heavier so you can participate in the activities that you enjoy! The type and intensity of exercises will be tailored to your specific needs and will be adapted as you progress throughout your plan of care.

Dry Needling Therapy

Dry needling involves using a small monofilament needle and inserting it into the muscle trigger point. These trigger points are dysfunctional areas in the muscle tissue that cause pain and tenderness. The monofilament initiates a muscle contraction and release leading to muscle relaxation, increased blood flow to the area and reduced pain. Results are typically seen after a few treatment sessions with some patients reporting symptoms relief after just one session. Your physical therapist will do a thorough evaluation to determine if dry needling is an appropriate intervention for you.

Myofascial Decompression (Cupping)

Cupping, is a manual therapy technique used to manipulate the fascia and reduce muscle tension in the body. The cups create a vacuum seal on the skin and underlying tissue. They can be applied statically or mobilized to release restricted fascia and improved blood flow, reduce tightness and improve pain.

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage (IASTM)

IASTM utilizes various tools to  relieve pain, help promote blood flow, increase range of motion by remodeling scar tissue, and encourage healing. It is used to treat numerous soft tissue conditions including strains, sprains, IT band syndrome, runners knee, plantar faciitis, shoulder injuries and more.
